FHWA - PennDOT STIC Initiative: Improve the Durability and Service Life of Concrete

Congratulations to the Pennsylvania concrete finishers who recently completed their NRMCA or ACI certification programs and to the 11 PennDOT Districts who hosted the inspector training module for construction inspection personnel. These finishers now meet the requirements for PennDOT projects that started in or after April of this year.

In total, 1,415 Pennsylvania finishers attended the NRMCA Exterior Flatwork Finishers Certification Course delivered by PACA since 2019 and have now received their lifetime certification making Pennsylvania the number one state in the nation. Additionally, there are 179 Pennsylvania finishers who currently hold the ACI finisher certification in the state.

What's the Difference Between the NRMCA Flatwork Certification and the ACI Flatwork Finisher Certification?

The NRMCA Exterior Flatwork Finishers Certification is the preferred certification program to meet the upcoming PennDOT requirement. This is due to the fact that it carries a lifetime certification and its focus is on finishing practices to achieve durable exterior concrete.

You can also meet the PennDOT requirement by either holding or getting the ACI Flatwork Finishers certification. That certification is required on many commercial construction projects, but it does carry a five (5)-year renewal.

The ACI Flatwork Finisher certification is offered by three groups in Pennsylvania and schedules of classes are announced on the websites linked below:
