The Situation

When Bill Ruark (Owner) and his son Ryan (General Manager) were considering pavement options for the entranceway way to Meshoppen Stone’s Elk Lake facility they knew that they needed a durable, long lasting answer. In addition, because of the investment that the company was about to make, it was also important that they got value for their expenditure.

“Last year our company was part of the supply chain for an RCC project that Masters Concrete was involved with at a large industrial facility in our area. We knew that the project went well and that the owner of that facility was pleased with the pavement and its performance. In addition, the pricing for asphalt pavement versus RCC pavement was virtually equal. The decision was easy” stated Bill Ruark.

We were very pleased with the performance of our contractor. Wayne Stephens and his crew are experienced placing RCC and they did a great job of getting in and getting the job done. There is no question that we would use RCC at our other facilities.

The Solution

The entranceway to the quarry is approximately 800’ long and 24’ wide. Truck traffic varies from as few as 25 trucks per day to 250 trucks per day during peak times. Because of the activity at the quarry, it was important that the construction had minimal impact on the company’s ability to service its customers.

RCC placement contractor Wayne Companies dba Florida RCC completed the paving on a Saturday (while the facility was closed) and the quarry was open for business again on Monday. “We were very pleased with the performance of our contractor. Wayne Stephens and his crew are experienced placing RCC and they did a great job of getting in and getting the job done. There is no question that we would use RCC at our other facilities” Ruark continued.

The concrete supplier for the job, Masters Concrete, has partnered with the Wayne Companies on prior RCC projects. “We have a great relationship with Wayne Stephens and enjoy working with them” stated Masters Concrete President Bob Housel. He continued, “What made this project particularly gratifying was that all the companies involved were members of the Pennsylvania Aggregates and Concrete Association. From the owner to the concrete supplier and contractor to our supply chain, everyone worked cooperatively to make this project a success.” Those companies on the supply side included: Red Oak Sand & Gravel, New Enterprise Stone & Lime, Buzzi Unicem, BASF, Centre Concrete, and Cleveland Brothers.
